Gelb states that it's okay for the first draft to be long, because when you revise, you're supposed to find the main idea on your first draft.
Then on the second draft, you would have to focus on that main idea. Gelb also states that every narrative needs a conflict, so your essay should be in a narrative form with a conflict.
